It is said that during the reign of king Dasaratha when Shani was about to enter Rohini Nakshatra, king Dasaratha worshipped Shani and pleased with his prayers Saturn did not enter Rohini during the reign of king Dasharatha. Hence the Dasaratha Shani stotras are considered an excellent remedy for Saturn related troubles.
While the king's condition was pitiable, he was in fact paying for something he did years ago as an young prince. The day before he died, he narrated the story to Kausalya; how he had killed an young man by mistake and his parents, having cursed the king that he too would die of agony caused by the separation from his son, gave up their lives!
To digress a little, it probably makes sense to ask MLA's and MP's and their children to read this episode of Ramayana. Hopefully their rash driving and ugly behaviour will be reduced. While the process of karma seems to be similar to our judicial system, it is time consuming and with different priorities. It is also sure and unforgiving. Dasharata had to pay for his mistakes, however unintentional. The story could serve as a warning, specially for the hit and run type of heroes.
To continue with the synopsis of Kamba Ramayana:
The author speaks about the life of pastoral peace in the forests, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana lived for 13 years. Lakshmana did everything to make life of Rama and Sita as enjoyable as possible. Where ever Rama wanted to stay, he would clear the forest, build a cottage, plant flowers, collect fruits and roots.
It was an idyll and one could get jealous as one read the description. The deep silence of the forest. The vast panaroma, the babbling brook, the tall trees, the cool shade, the blue skies visible through the dense foliage. All contributed to their life of beauty and simplicity. Rama and Lakshmana would go in the morning to gather fruits and roots; Sita would cook, feed them and later eat.
In the evening they would go out and enjoy; listen to the murmur of the brooks, distant sounds of a water fall, the far off roar of a lion; sometimes watch the frolics of the monkeys or play with a sportive fawn. Rama would tell Sita stories from Veda and Puranas. Sometimes Sita would sing and koils would go silent in admiration acknowledging a master. Thus passed the life of that pair, happy in the unmeasured fullness of each other's love.
