Prof. Dr. Satya Vrat Shastri's Thai Ramayana 18. Episode of Darabi. A misunderstanding.

The story of the enmity between brothers Vali and Sugriva, a case of misunderstanding!

Long long ago, Nandakala born in the race of demons and a native of Kailasa, was appointed as a guard of one of the gates of Kailasa. Once seeing a concubine of Siva in a garden, he the lustful, suddenly threw a flower at her to attract her attention. Shaken by his rudeness she approached Lord Siva who pronounced a curse on him for the transgression of his conduct.

He was instantly born as a large-bodied buffalo named Dharaba. The lord gave the injunction that he would be killed by his son. On account of which the demon killed many sons as soon as they were born. All his queens  afflicted by the murder of the sons for years decided to protect the next child. When one of them became pregnant, she hid in a cave of a forest. In time she gave birth to a strong-bodied son and told him about the cruel deed of his father and came out of the cave.

In course of time the son named Dharabi not known to his father reached the forest and remembering his mother's words challenged him for a duel. And having killed him in a duel, he assuming an air of bravery went to Siva and challenged him for a duel. Siva told him to go to Valin from whose hands his death had been decided upon.

Dharabhi met Valin and challenged him. Highly intolerant of the challenge, Valin flew into a rage and fought a hard duel but could not vanquish him. Valin told the buffalo to fight in a cave the following day. The buffalo agreed. Valin then asked his younger brother Sugriva to stand at the mouth of the cave and notice the flow of
the blood to determine thereby his victory or defeat. If the blood was dark in color, he should take it that the buffalo is killed. If it were otherwise, he should take it that his brother is killed.

Valin entered the cave and after sometime, it began to rain in great fury. In the meantime the wicked buffalo was killed by Valin. The blood streaming out got mixed with the rain water and did not appear dark. Sugriva thought his elder brother was killed. To block the exit of the buffalo he closed the mouth of the cave tightly with stones and left. Valin came to mouth of the cave and saw it blocked. He managed to get out after a great effort.

As he thought about it, an ugly misunderstanding arose! 'He had an eye for my kingdom, though my younger brother, he desired my death. He wanted me to perish in the cave.'  On reaching the capital, he banished Sugriva. He did not listen to Sugriva as the misunderstanding had taken deep roots.
