Prof.Dr.Satya Vrat Shastri's Thai Ramayana 37. The demon Mahipaladeva

The story of the war and the death of Ravana is  very briefly dealt in this Thai version. We now meet a demon whose name ends with a 'deva!'

Rama returned to his city after installing Vibhisana as the king of Lanka. Mahipaladeva a great friend of Ravana and the ruler of Cakravala came visiting. He had not heard about  Ravana's death. When he learned that his friend was killed by Rama with the help of Ravana's brother, he was very angry and sought  revenge. He besieged the well protected Lanka.  Vibhisana, who had taken the name Dasagrivansa after becoming king was worried. He possessed neither the power or capacity of his brother Ravana.

However, Rama before leaving Lanka had promised Vibhisana that if he was in trouble, he could seek help, 'From today onwards I shall send forth a sharp arrow every week. If  you were to fall in trouble, you send a letter through it.'  Remembering these words,  he tied a letter to an arrow and released it. It at once reached the lord of the Raghus, who spoke to Hanuman and instructed him to liberate their friend from distress.

Hanuman with a new name, Phya Anuja was now the king of the city named Nava. He at once set out for the city of Lanka and challenged the demon , 'Be ready for a duel, I am your death,' The demon did not take the challenge seriously and asked the monkey to run away and save himself, saying that by fighting a monkey,  'I shall certainly become a laughing stock.'

After an exchange of insults and threats, they attacked each other and injured both bled profusely. Then Hanuman attempting to end the fight lifted the demon and whirled him round and round and split him into two. But within a moment the demon again united. This perplexed Hanuman and Vibhisana advised him 'As long as the chest of the vile demon is not burst asunder, he can be slain by none on the surface of the world.' Hanuman immediately took action and burst the chest of the demon and put him to death.

These special features of demons should explain why it is not easy to get rid of them!
