He opened his eyes and saw the carcass of a dog floating in the river with a crow poking at it. This made the demon uneasy and he left the worship incomplete and walked away after picking up his spear. It was Hanuman who had resorted to this to obstruct the worship and had assumed the form of a carcass of a dog. Angada had taken the form of a crow.
Kumbhakarna marched towards Rama's army and encountered Lakshmana and there ensued a long drawn and hard battle between the two. He finally hurled his spear at Lakshmana and even though its full power was not awakened, the spear was able to knock Lakshmana down senseless.
Vibhisana asked the grief stricken army to fetch the celestial herb from the mountain Sarvaya and said, 'He should take the herb before sunrise tomorrow!' Having heard this, Hanuman, the son of the wind leapt up to the sky and set out towards Sarvaya. On his way the sun rays enveloped him and he became worried that the sun would rise before he could go back with the herbs. He sought to turn back the chariot of the sun by holding on it firmly and was singed by the sun rays.
Sun realising that the devotee of Rama was singed brought him back to life and gave him the lustre of gold. The sun then concealed himself behind clouds so that even in daytime it was dark like night. Hanuman happy with it, started his journey again and reached Sarvaya, the king of mountains.
