Prof.Dr.Satya Vrat Shastri's Thai Ramayana 34, Hanuman goes looking for the special herbs

Hanuman reached Mt.Sarvaya and called out for the herb. The herb sent words that it was down below. Hanuman went down and could not see it. He again heard the herb saying it was at a higher place. When he went up he could not see the herb and therefore was very dejected. He got tired of going to and fro again and again. He applied his mind and succeeded in getting hold of the herb.

Hope you enjoyed the poetic description of the search! Valmiki's Hanuman just lifts up the mountain and carries it as he does not want to waste time!

The herb had to be sprinkled with water of five rivers for it to be effective. But the five rivers were far off in Ayodhya. Nothing was impossible for the son of the wind, he at once reached the city and collected the waters and sprinkled them on the herb. He gave it to Rama and with its use Lakshamana awoke as if from death. There arose a tumultous roar of joy in the entire army of Rama.

The roar fell on the ears of Kumbhakarna striking terror. When he came to know that Lakshamna had recovered, he with a desire to avenge, grew his body and covered the river. In seven days there was no water for Rama's army. The place this vile demon was lying down was known only to flower-girls. Hanuman assumed their form and went with them and as soon as he reached, he kicked Kumbhakara making him get up at once.

Kumbhakarna after receiving a number of blows from the monkey and unable to fight back ran from there. He came back again to attack the army of monkeys with his spear and created terror on all sides. To stop him, Rama came forward and hurled the Brahma-weapon at the demon, by which the demon fell dead.

Before entering the mouth of death the demon saw Narayana with his conch, disc, mace and trident and pointing out the path to heaven. Filled with joy, having fallen at the feet of Rama and not depressed at heart, the demon left for his heavenly abode.

This depiction of Kumbhakarna is in conformity with his character a reluctant partner in an evil design but karmayogi nevertheless!
